Simon Birdsall | Accounts on Point

What's your 30-second elevator speech?

I believe Coronavirus has changed the use of elevator pitches in my industry. If I am in a 30-second situation, I’ll get straight to the point without the need to intrigue or excite: I run a bookkeeping team and we help small business owners.

We’re currently not narrowing in on any pain points, niche, size, or stage of a business - In these times we can and will help any business, whether it is to survive, grow or exit.

Who inspires you the most to be the best you can be as a person?

I’m very inspired by and grateful for my family, team and clients.

Can you tell us a little bit about your business and the areas you specialise in?

I’ve been in the accounting industry and helping small businesses for 18 years, and 12 years ago is when I started my bookkeeping business, Accounts On Point. I have always wanted to look after my clients as best as possible, so hiring and training a great team has always been a priority. For service delivery, my main roles are to oversee the client onboarding process and then be available to clients as an adviser. My favourite part of this is to set up business intelligence dashboards so that, at a glance, my clients can see their business’ vital signs and take proactive or remedial action.

Can you tell me about one of your client success stories?

My first ever client, Magicdust, doubled their revenue in the second year I was with them, then quadrupled their revenue by year 4. They were a BRW Fast 100 company that year but that’s not the success story! This sort of rapid growth is often accompanied by poor cash management and even losses. Magicdust made a conscious effort to practice good financial management before expanding. This laid the foundation for consistent profit and healthy cash positions through the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and for well over a decade after.

What’s your favourite thing about working at Motive Coworking?

I love how I can go there to get some serious grind work done and then when I’m done I can enjoy the relaxed, friendly environment. Sometimes I even meet new dogs there!

What does life look like outside your business profile? What do you like doing for fun?

I’m pretty into health and fitness so when I’m not working, I’m either exercising or getting some R&R with the family. We’ll be at the beach if the weathers good.

Is there anything you would like to share? Or anything you’d like to offer help with?

If any Motive members want to improve business cash flow, I’ll do a free setup of some free software that shows exactly what actions to take (no need to pay a consultant for this). Of course, for the software to work there needs to be up-to-date and accurate accounts – and if that’s not the case, I can do a free consultation to show the way.  My email address is simon@accountsonpoint.com.au.
